"Stepping It Hotter This Year." Raising Mothers is open for submissions
Now that back to school is out of the way, send us your best work! Plus, so much more.
Dear Writers & Community,
Happy September and welcome to Raising Mothers! We hope that you’ve had a restful, or invigorating, or revelatory summer. Maybe it was a bit of all those. I mostly hope you had some moments of contagious joy and deep rest. We are ready to get back to everything over here and look forward to reading your stories.
We moved RM over the summer and I’m still working on the formatting older posts. Forgive us while we are still under construction basically. We also ran our annual FUND-Raising Mothers fundraiser. Do you get it? FUND-Raising? It was funny to me when I came up with it. Plus, my daughter was watching ‘High School Musical, the Musical, the Series’ over the summer and I thought that name was brilliant, ha! Our first goal was to gain 100 annual subscribers over the month of August, now that we’ve stepped into year NINE.
Cue…Ini Kamoze
Just like Ini Kamoze, we are stepping in with renewed energy and purpose. Nothing is stopping us or slowing RM down.
Massive thank you to our newest paid members:
, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and others.Warmest thank you to
, , , , and our 200+ newest free subscribers this past month! I decided to start from scratch when I moved platforms in order to get a sense of who you are. It gives me great pleasure that so many of you have found this space, even while we’re under construction and decided this is a place you want to stick around and help grow.I know not everyone is interested in writing for Raising Mothers, and that’s fine. We are one part writers and one part readers. So how can you continue to be the best community possible? Share our work across your social channels, join our activities as they happen, and consider becoming a paid member. During our summer fundraiser we gave Founding Members of RM a gift paid membership to our sister/mother project, Literary Liberation. If you join us as a Founding Member before the first day of Fall, we will gift 3 months of access to Literary Liberation as an additional thank you.
This year will see big, positive changes. I can feel it in my bones.

Now on to our calls for 2024/2025
Below is a link to everything currently open at RM! Check it out and send in your best work:
Special Calls
Mama’s Writing
I’ve never put out a call for this column since
Ten Questions
I’ve also ran this column directly, but this year the theme is ease. With that in mind, if you’d like to be featured please email me directly at hello@raisingmothers.com with Ten Questions: Your Name in the subject line. Include a link to your book. You do not have to be a parent. The idea is to amplify the work happening in our literary community. This will also be a rolling submission, but please drop me an email by September 30 to be considered.
Serial Fiction
We’ve never done this before and would really love to start. This will have its own call announcement once we’re officially ready for it, but start ideating, writers. Selected work will be paid.
Come Work With Us!
We are in need of the following positions at Raising Mothers to help us streamline and strengthen in our ninth year and beyond. Positions at Raising Mothers are volunteer, with all work happening remotely and async. We are a community of parents, and that is always taken into consideration as far as time constraints. A separate page will be created for this on the main site, but for now this is some of what we’re looking for:
Managing Editor
Interviews Editor
Nonfiction Editor
Fiction Editor (includes Flash)
Illustrators
All positions require the same basic skills and come with the same expectations:
You have strong communication skills and are detailed oriented.
You are available a maximum of 10 hours a month (avg. 6 hours), depending on the workload. We want to prioritize people interested in building a long-term relationship, but ask for a minimum 1 year commitment.
You are independent, self-starting, and generous with skills outside of your set role.
You believe in the mission of Raising Mothers, participate in our public and social efforts, and prioritize the voices of the Global Majority beyond this relationship.
More on this coming soon!
I submitted something a little over a month ago before the call. Would that still be a valid submission?
