🥳 Happy Birthday, RAISING MOTHERS!
Nine years of outstanding work sharing narratives of the Global majority. Support our work by contributing to our fundraiser!
Today, July 29, marks the anniversary of the first post for Raising Mothers. When we began, many of us were raising toddlers. Now, we have teens, pre-teens, more kids, and new family dynamics. Our community has grown, and our understanding of 21st-century parenting has expanded. We’ve become more radical and centered, continually learning to care for ourselves and each other.
Raising Mothers has published interviews, essays, poetry, comics, hosted workshops, and had virtual talks. We’ve expanded to Literary Liberation. We’ve had a roster of world-class editors that have worked with heart and dedication to centering our narratives. I couldn’t be prouder.
Before anyone else was saying it, before it became popular in a covid-stricken world, I reminded you in 2015 that all mothers are working mothers. This has been the space I’ve felt most at ease bringing my full self to. The goal has always been the same, and has only expanded in ways that are truly more inclusive of our Global majority: create a digital platform that centers us, first and only. The sheer act of existing is an act of resistance to the norms of what we are told parenthood is and should be.
Support Our Mission
Next month, we are launching a crucial fundraiser. Having your support means being able to pay writers for their work — a goal we’ve been reaching towards since 2016. Signing up at any level that is comfortable for you is what we ask. We especially call on members outside of our direct community of color to support this work and assist in re-centering the most marginalized in the parenting discussion.
Centering the narratives of the Global majority is essential. Especially, especially in 2024. We live in a time where our rights are being openly stripped away, our voices and histories are being forcibly silenced. I believe those of us with more access always have a personal responsibility to actively aide in the dismantling of any system that seeks to oppress the marginalized. Touting the importance of the work without any tangible support doesn’t feed families or keep lights on.
